SAN JUAN SYMPHONY TO PRESENT “NEW WINE: SAME BOTTLE” AS SECOND CONCERT OF 2008-09 SEASON

Durango, CO – The San Juan Symphony will continue its ambitious 2008-09 Symphonic Visions season on Saturday, November 22 at 7:30 pm at Henderson Performance Hall in Farmington and Sunday, November 23 at 3 pm at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College when music director Arthur Post leads the ensemble in New Wine: Same Bottle.

This second concert of the season continues to explore the evolution of the Symphony as the form composers have chosen for their most ambitious artistic statements. It will include masterpieces by Mozart, Bizet, Takemitsu and James P. Johnson, and will feature soloists Rochelle Mann on alto flute and Rosalind Simpson on harp. According to Maestro Post, the Symphony first germinated in Haydn’s hands, then bloomed in new colors and proportions in Mozart’s. Since then the symphonic form has challenged composers of all types to flex their compositional muscles. In 1932, to depict the spirited street life of Harlem, jazzman James P. Johnson poured lively syncopations and soulful hymns into the symphonic form. The result is an intoxicating brew.
