The program for the evening will include Haydn’s Sonata in C minor, Schumann’s Sonata in F sharp minor, Chopin’s Three waltzes, Op. 64, Brahms’ 4 Pieces, Op. 119 and Ravel’s La Valse. Ian Hobson’s international career was launched in 1981 when he won First Prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition; he has since established himself as a musician of tremendous versatility with an international reputation as a pianist, conductor and teacher. While Hobson is one of the leading proponents and interpreters of Rachmaninoff, both on the podium and at the keyboard, his performances and discography highlight a prolific artist whose programs consistently demonstrate a repertoire spanning the centuries and demand an extraordinary command of styles and scholarly vision, in addition to great keyboard prowess. Hobson’s recordings of Sergei Rachmaninov’s five works for piano and orchestra, played and conducted from the keyboard, arose from his longstanding relationship with the remarkable Sinfonia Varsovia which began in 1995. He had long intended to record Rachmaninov’s concerti as a pianist, but his rapport with the orchestra and the superb chamber music sensibility of its musicians led to the bold step of assuming the dual role of pianist and conductor for the recording, completing the four year long project in 2006. Additionally, Mr. Hobson conducted Sinfonia Varsovia at Carnegie Hall with Ewa Podles as soloist in Karol Szymanowski's "Three Songs" as well as Beethoven's "Eroica" Symphony and Chopin's second piano concerto, conducted and played by Hobson from the keyboard. Hobson is also active as an opera conductor with a wide range of repertoire ranging from Cimarosa and Pergolesi, Mozart and Beethoven through works by Johann and Richard Strauss. In September 1997 he conducted and recorded John Philip Sousa's comic opera "El Capitan" in a newly restored version with the Sinfonia da Camera and a stellar cast of young singers. Hobson’s discography is as wide and prolific as his variety of programs and included among the more than 50 titles are the 32 Beethoven Sonatas, music of Brahms, Ravel, Falla, Moscheles, Schumann, Schubert, Godowsky, Mendelssohn, Francaix, Milhaud, Saint-Saens, Walton, Sousa, Quincy Porter and Gillis, just to name a few. Mr. Hobson’s recordings are available on the Arabesque, Zephyr, Albany, BMG, EMI, and Hyperion labels. The New York-based Adams Foundation is an organization dedicated to restoring the piano recital in small communities throughout the United States. # # # |
