Dear Friends of San Juan Symphony

Your local San Juan Symphony has brought 36 years of listening enjoyment to hundreds of residents and visitors to the Four Corners region. In his seventh season, Music Director, Arthur Post has taken up the baton of artistic leadership. Our extended family of talented local musicians will play this season with a blend of student musicians from the entire Four Corners region. You’ll hear new excellence in the sound of the San Juan Symphony this season.

The youth in our Four Corners communities will hear the sounds of the San Juan Symphony as well, thanks to the generosity of our grant makers, foundation support, and your local contributions. There are 71 schools and 83 classroom teachers participating in our Youth Education Program reaching over 4,000 youth in elementary, middle, high school, alternative, private, and charter schools, and homeschoolers. An age appropriate curriculum including a CD of selections from each concert find their way into these classrooms for a unique learning experience. We rely on your donations to help underwrite student tickets to the symphony at greatly reduced or no cost.

Your San Juan Symphony depends on YOU to provide support to keep the music playing. Each concert costs an average of $30,000. Our Youth Education Program must raise a minimum of $35,000 to continue producing lesson plans and two-youth concerts each season. Marketing and operational costs add to the mix of funds needed to make the San Juan Symphony play in your community.

The Dean Furry Chair was established in 2001 to honor Dr. Dean Furry, a retired cellist with the longest tenure of any musician in the symphony. The income from this endowment supports the first chair cellist, currently held by Dr. Katherine Jetter. Our goal is to endow the Chair with $20,000.

Honoring the retirement of Richard Strawn, in November 2003 the Richard Strawn Concertmaster Chair endowment fund was established and supports the concertmaster position. Richard Strawn is a founding member of the San Juan Symphony, and was the longtime concertmaster of the San Juan Symphony.

In June 2005, the Kris Andrea Young Musician Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor the life of Kris Andrea. Kris’ love of the San Juan Symphony and young musicians inspired this special gift to support youth in developing their musical talent.

We invite you to join the San Juan Symphony at your level of choice and enter the circle of friends who share a commitment to support the mission of the SJS. If you already are a donor, we thank you for your generosity, and respectfully we ask, will you consider raising your level of commitment this season?  Donors will be listed in the concert program guide this concert season.  In addition, the San Juan Symphony was designated as an Enterprise Zone by the State of Colorado in 2007.  If you pay income tax in Colorado, this designation provides you with a tax credit of 25% of your donation of $250 or more to the SJS in any given year on your Colorado income tax return.
